As part of the ongoing war between the state of Burma (which the military dictatorship has been demanding be referred to as “Myanmar”) and a multitude of ethnic minority groups who wish to leave the central state, the Burmese Army has bombed a Karen village, killing at least 2 civilians and wounding 2 more. The Karen ethnic group and its paramilitary forces, the Karen National Union, has been struggling for independence since 1949, when the Burmese state reneged on promises to let them keep the autonomy that the British Empire gave to them. Springtime of Nations has a comprehensive video on the Burmese wars for secession involving not only the Karens but the Arakans, the Karachi, the Kokang and others.
